May 14 2005 6:44PM"Islamists" behind Uzbek violence - senior Russian analysts
MOSCOW. May 14 (Interfax) - Two senior Russian political scientists
expressed confidence on Saturday that "Islamists" were behind Friday's
violence in Uzbekistan.
"Now it has been possible to normalize the situation, but this does
not mean that external forces will not again try to destabilize the
situation," Sergei Markov, director of the Political Studies Institute,
told Interfax.
"Islamists are a powerful structure and probably the main political
alternative to the Uzbek president, Islam Karimov," he said.
Radical Islamists "are the main cause of the current riots in
Andizhan," Markov said.
